Although it was initially named Red Rock, it was renamed after Levi Woodbury, the first justice on the United States Supreme Court that attended law school. The government of this township had initially been organized back in 1858. The Charles Spangenberg Farmstead is one of few 19th-century farms still standing in the area, which got it a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. 

1955 is when the first developments for suburban housing began. Throughout the years, the region has experienced a steady increase in the metropolitan expansion that then gave way to copious amounts of housing, industrial buildings, and shopping centers.
