How To Save Important Documents & Photos After Water Damage In 6 Easy Steps

3/8/2023 (Permalink)

Here are some tips for salvaging water-damaged documents, photographs, and books.

Water damage can be a devastating event, particularly when it affects important documents, photographs, and books that hold sentimental or monetary value. However, there are steps you can take to save these items and prevent further damage. Here are some tips for salvaging water-damaged documents, photographs, and books:

1. Act quickly

The first and most important step is to act quickly. The longer your documents, photographs, or books remain wet, the more damage they will sustain. As soon as possible, remove the items from the water and place them in a dry, well-ventilated area.

2. Separate and sort

Sort your damaged items into different categories based on the severity of the damage. Items that are only slightly damp can be air-dried, while those that are heavily saturated will require more advanced techniques.

3. Air-dry documents and photographs

Lay the documents and photographs out flat on a clean, dry surface. If possible, place a fan nearby to increase air circulation. Do not use a hair dryer or other heat source, as this can cause further damage.

4. Freeze books

If your books are water-damaged, the pages may stick together and become warped. To prevent further damage, place the books in a plastic bag and freeze them until they can be properly dried.

5. Contact a restoration specialist

If your items are heavily damaged or require specialized restoration techniques, contact a professional restoration specialist. These experts have the knowledge and tools to restore your items to their pre-damaged condition.

6. Take preventative measures

To prevent future water damage, store your important documents, photographs, and books in a safe, dry place. Consider using waterproof containers or placing them in a safe deposit box.

Vacuum Freezing

Vacuum freezing is a specialized technique used by restoration specialists to restore water-damaged documents and photographs. This method is particularly effective for items that are delicate or have been heavily saturated with water.

The vacuum freezing process involves placing the damaged items in a vacuum chamber and lowering the temperature to below freezing. This causes the water in the items to sublimate or turn from a solid to a gas, without passing through the liquid state. This process removes moisture from the items without causing further damage.

After the items have been vacuum-frozen, they are removed from the chamber and slowly thawed. This allows any remaining moisture to evaporate without causing additional damage. The items are then dried using specialized techniques such as air-drying or dehumidification.

One of the benefits of vacuum freezing is that it can be used to restore items that would otherwise be too delicate to be air-dried or dehumidified. It can also be used to restore items that have been damaged by mold or other types of contaminants, as the freezing process kills any microorganisms that may be present.

In conclusion, water damage can be a stressful and overwhelming event. However, by acting quickly and following these tips, you can salvage your important documents, photographs, and books and prevent further damage. Remember, if your items are heavily damaged, it is important to contact a restoration specialist to ensure the best possible outcome.

What Causes Burst Pipes? What Can I Do to Prevent It?

7/14/2022 (Permalink)

If you experience a burst pipe, the first step is to turn off the Water Main. Then, be sure to call a restoration company like SERVPRO

What Causes Pipe Bursts? What Can I Do to Avoid It?

Burst pipes are a common occurrence in Cottage Grove, MN as the colder months set in. Many residents and workers are in buildings where the pipes are potentially older than their grandparents! It sounds like a car backfiring, this loud pop sound when these water pipes burst. The result is major flooding in the home and structural damage problems for homeowners. SERVPRO of Northeast Minneapolis has compiled a list of the four main reasons why burst pipes occur:

  1. Frozen Pipes
  2. Moving Pipes
  3. Water Pressure
  4. Corrosion

Frozen Pipes

In the Winter months, serious issues arise for the water supply pipes in the home. Cold temperatures generally cause contraction to occur. Ice has more volume than water, so when water freezes inside a pipe it expands and increases pressure inside the pipe. The pressure builds and needing to escape it’s forced to burst out of the pipe. The burst will occur at the weakest point in the pipe, with pressure bursting right out of the side of the pipe wall.

To prevent frozen pipes, make sure that your home never goes below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Open your cabinet doors below the sink to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes as well.

Moving Pipes

Pipes can actually move around within the walls if they’re not properly secured AND the water is suddenly turned on or off. One way to know for sure is if you can hear your water pipes making noise inside the walls or floors. If your pipes sound like they’re clanging against each other, it’s called a water hammer. What you’re hearing is that the pipes are moving back and forth due to not being held into place properly. Gradually, these pipes become weakened in the joints until one pipe fails and pressurized water has a crevice to escape from. This causes the water pipe to break and flood an entire floor within a few moments!

Water Pressure

Water pressure must be kept at a normal setting in order for your water supply pipes to function properly. Any noticeable increase in the water pressure can translate to a burst pipe. It can also lead to a sink, toilet, or tub. As pressure increases, the pipes will cave in and separate, causing a rupture. Think your water pressure is getting too high? Here’s what to do!

  • Monitor it by attaching a pressure gauge to a sink spout and turning on the faucet. The pressure will move the needle on the gauge and display the water pressure in psi (pounds per square inch).
  • The water pressure in most homes is between 30-50 psi to avoid damage to pipes and plumbing fixtures.
  • If your home’s water pressure is too high, a SERVPRO technician can install a pressure reducing valve to bring it down to safer levels.

Corrosion

Pipes are meant to last a long time and provide decades worth of reliable service, but they aren’t able to last indefinitely. Over time, buildings experience corrosion which can mean that pipes will show signs of failure or decay. Corrosion is caused by an imbalance of pH in the water. At first, this seems to be a minor issue, but it takes its tolls on the pipes over the years.

Many water supply pipes are made of galvanized iron, the minerals inside the water slowly wear down the galvanized coating and expose the iron pipe beneath. In time, the iron turns to rust and gradually clogs the interior of the pipe which prevents water from getting through. As a result, your pipe may burst or the water flow may be stopped entirely.

What Should I Do Now?

If you experience a burst pipe, the first step is to turn off the Water Main. Then, be sure to call a professional from SERVPRO of Northeast Minneapolis to remediate the water damage and to determine the cause of the burst pipe. Why is it important? Early detection and annual checkups can help prevent this issue from happening again in the future. Our team of experienced water remediation technicians is able to assist in giving tips for preventing water damage in addition to offering cleanup services.

If this happens to your building, don’t worry. Our team will be on-site as soon as possible to start removing water and determining the source of damage to prevent future disasters. We know that burst pipes are unexpected and downright terrifying, but leave it to us to get it fixed promptly. We’re able to remove water quickly so you won’t have to replace everything and you can go back to your daily routine as soon as possible.

How the Storm Restoration Process Works for Businesses

4/27/2022 (Permalink)

A SERVPRO Franchise Professional in Cottage Grove, MN, can quickly assess the damage and get your business up and running in no time.

How Does The Storm Restoration Process Affect Businesses?

When you experience a flood, overflowing sinks or leaky plumbing, your business needs storm and flood damage services — and it needs them fast. Here is what you should do in the aftermath of an emergency situation:

1. Keep an Emergency Plan on File

You should have an emergency plan in place for your business that contains your insurance coverage, emergency contacts and other important documents. That way if you find yourself in an emergency situation, you won't have to scramble to find your preferred storm restoration provider and begin the restoration process

2. Call a Professional

While there are some things you can do on your own, it's best to leave storm response to the professionals. A SERVPRO Franchise Professional in Cottage Grove, MN, can quickly assess the damage and get your business up and running in no time.

The restoration process typically includes:

  • An initial assessment
  • Water removal
  • Drying and dehumidifying
  • Cleaning and sanitizing

3. Safely Do What You Can Before a Professional Arrives

Your top priority after an emergency is safety. Electrical hazards should be one of your main concerns. If it is safe to do so, you can perform a few storm restoration tasks, such as:

  • Removing antiques, books, art and other valuables from the area
  • Mopping up excess water
  • Moving furniture from wet carpeting
  • Blotting wood furniture

4. Know Your Limits

Exercise common sense as you do what you can to begin the cleanup. Remember that wet materials are heavy, for example. Most household vacuums are not equipped to handle water, so don't attempt to remove water that way.

You can turn on air conditioning in the summer months to aid drying, but don't turn on ceiling fans or light fixtures if the ceiling is wet. Generally speaking, if the area feels unsafe, it's best to leave it to the professionals.

One of the most important aspects of an emergency situation is your quick response. Having a provider that's there for you at any time will help speed up the storm restoration process.

What Do Mold Removal Products Do for Cottage Grove Homes?

2/21/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Woodbury, Cottage Grove is aware of what you will need when it comes to mold. We are ready to help you all the way.

Mold removal and remediation are aided by surface treatment solutions used in Cottage Grove homes

Mold inspections help determine the extent of the damage and the affected materials. Some mold damage in area homes can be treated with antimicrobial/sporicidal products when caught early enough.

Inhibiting the Growth of Mold

Antimicrobial products are a staple of mold removal for Cottage Grove homes. Surface treatment solutions are non-invasive and can successfully eradicate mold organisms before the colonies spread too far. Another advantage to using antimicrobial products on surfaces throughout the affected areas of your home is inhibiting mold growth. Its chemical makeup designed to eliminate mold growth can also act as a defense against the seating of new colonies while remediation and water cleanup continues.

More Aggressive Mold Removal

When surface treatment solutions are ineffective and less feasible, more aggressive or abrasive options exist to reach depths beyond the surface of affected hosting materials. Some of the more common of these options chosen by our team include:

  • Sanding – Using power sanding equipment or elbow grease, we can remove the top layer of affected material where mold is present to reach beyond this finished surface for more effective mold remediation.
  • Media Blasting – Certain media under pressurized air or water can blast away growth on the surface of materials and reach into the substrate to eradicate the entire infestation of specific affected materials. Often pressurized air is more desirable to limit the increase of moisture in the environment.
  • Controlled Demolition – When all else fails, and the damage is worse than remediation can help, our general contractor license grants us to complete controlled demolition and necessary repairs.

It is often the first choice of our responding remediation professionals to treat active mold colonies with antimicrobial and biocide products. There is no guarantee that these initial options for eliminating organisms will be effective, so more aggressive measures are often necessary for certain areas more deeply and completely impacted by the infestation. Our SERVPRO of Woodbury, Cottage Grove team is standing by to help at (651) 314-4631.

Is Drying Wetness a Sufficient Intervention During Mold Removal From Woodbury Homes?

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

When you notice mold contamination, there is a chance of current water leaks or past unresolved moisture accumulation.

SERVPRO Relies on Comprehensive Approaches Beyond Moisture Management When Addressing Mold

When you notice mold contamination in your Woodbury property, there is a chance of current water leaks or past unresolved moisture accumulation. Therefore, you might consider drying the property as the ultimate solution to address the situation. However, mold remediation is a complex process that requires diverse restoration solutions.

When planning for mold removal from your Woodbury home, it is crucial to note that moisture is the most significant contributor to mold contamination. It activates the spores found naturally in the environment but are dormant until conditions are favorable for growth. Drying property can halt development, but it does not resolve the other issues like staining, deterioration of materials, and the musty odors emitted by moldy residues. That is why SERVPRO looks for comprehensive ways to address all the problems.

Some of the other necessary actions for successful mold remediation include:

  • Removing deteriorated materials
  • Cleaning surfaces and contents
  • Deodorization to remove odors
  • Controlling microbial growth

Removing moldy materials from your property can require several procedures depending on what is affected. In case of contents such as furniture, move-outs can help relocate the items for cleaning elsewhere or for disposal. Building skills are required to disengage the materials from the structure for structural materials. Our IICRC trained SERVPRO technicians help set up appropriate containment when removing moldy materials to prevent residues from spreading and risky exposure.

Moldy residues can soil or even stain surfaces. Drying moisture cannot eliminate these soils. Our SERVPRO crew chiefs evaluate the type of soiling to determine the best cleaning method.

Some cleaning approaches that remove moldy residues include:

  • Sanding
  • Damp wiping
  • Blast cleaning with soda ash or dry ice

Finishing procedures are essential when addressing mold in your property. One helpful finishing step is deodorization which eliminates musty odors or unpleasant smells. Our technicians can mist deodorizers all over your property using ULV foggers.

SERVPRO of Woodbury, Cottage Grove offers innovative mold removal solutions that can deal with contamination, "Like it never even happened." Call us at (651) 314-4631.

A kitchen fire can burn through a home before you know. Call SERVPRO of Woodbury, Cottage Grove as soon as you can.

SERVPRO Can Provide Fire and Smoke Damage Restoration and Cleanup in Woodbury

One popular pastime thousands enjoy across the country while the weather is warm is barbecuing with family or friends. Now that the summer is nearing an end and the frost will soon be returning, people are starting to schedule their end-of-season barbecues. However, it is wise that people use caution while cooking outdoors due to the risk of starting a fire that could spread to your home.

When restoring fire damage in Woodbury, our SERVPRO crew finds several structural blazes caused by barbecuing mishaps. It could be fine one minute when you enjoy smelling the meat on the smoker or flipping burgers, but then it is possible to get distracted (especially while friends and family are around). All it takes is one minute away from the grill or smoker, and a gust of wind could come up and either knock it over or sending a coal flying. Hot coals coming from the knocked-over grill could ignite some fuels from the outside, and then before you know it, the flames have reached the exterior of your house.

Whenever a fire ignites on your property, the first thing you should do is notify the fire department immediately. Once the fire gets extinguished, and the fire department clears the property, we can then begin the following to assist you:

Should Homeowners in Cottage Grove Perform Needed Water Damage Mitigation on Their Own?

8/6/2021 (Permalink)

Regardless whether the intrusion came from above or below, water damage in your home must be dealt with quickly before deterioration occurs.

Progressive Deterioration and Secondary Damage are Too Serious to Risk -- Why SERVPRO Experts Must Evaluate Cottage Grove Water Damage Repair Needs

Inattentive moments can result in the need for Cottage Grove water damage mitigation. Sometimes a quick mop takes care of the situation. Other spills, overflows, and the “sudden” burst pipes of neglected plumbing create the possibility of significant harm to the contents and structures, often in areas hidden from view.

What Are Reasons Why SERVPRO Can Find and Halt Water Damage Fast and Effectively?

A Cottage Grove resident can only investigate visible water incursions, while SERVPRO technicians are trained and equipped to detect and measure moisture even covered by structures. We follow the restoration industry’s best practices protocols to stop the continued migration and remove liquid water. Examples include:

  • Clearing the affected space of wet contents
  • Wanding the edges of water exposure on carpeting
  • Removing standing water with pumps and extractors

How Do Trained Technicians Determine Drying Goals?

Our drying team creates conditions that facilitate the evaporation of moisture trapped inside building materials using specialized equipment. Successful water damage mitigation and remediation rely upon drying wet structures to the baseline found in your Cottage Grove home, why SERVPRO records moisture levels of wet materials compared to measurements of similar dry materials elsewhere in your home. Armed with this data we achieve the drying goal by:

  • Positioning and repositioning commercial-grade air movers
  • Adding heaters because warm air absorbs moisture more efficiently
  • Deploying dehumidifiers to capture and then condense or absorb the water vapor for disposal

Have confidence that reliance on SERVPRO of Woodbury, Cottage Grove for your water mitigation needs is never misplaced. Contact us at (651) 314-4631 for a review of your options.

What is the Difference Between Mold Removal & Mold Remediation in Woodbury Homes?

6/17/2021 (Permalink)

Let SERVPRO of Woodbury, Cottage Grove help you understand the difference between mold removal & mold remediation.

SERVPRO Experts Know Exactly What Needs to Be Done for Mold Removal in Woodbury

A professional restoration company like SERVPRO understands it is impossible to completely remove all traces of mold from any building. The microscopic spores are everywhere. But what we can do is provide mold remediation to help prevent it from growing.

Mold Remediation – Getting Rid of Mold

When mold develops in Woodbury homes, mold removal experts are often called to clean up the growth. At SERVPRO, our technicians have the expertise and training required to remediate mold. Each situation is unique, but we take certain steps no matter how bad the mold is. The general mold remediation process includes:

  • Inspecting and assessing the mold damage
  • Containment
  • Air filtration
  • Removal of mold and any material infested with mold
  • Cleaning structural elements and content
  • Restoration

Removing the Moisture Source

One of the key elements to prevent mold from returning is addressing the water source that allowed it to develop. Mold spores are everywhere, and they float along in the air. The spores need moisture to grow, and when they find it, they rapidly expand into colonies. Our techs locate the moisture and remove that if needed. They discuss ways to ensure your home stays at the proper humidity level and other risk factors.

Need a Reputable Fire Restoration Partner in Woodbury?

1/21/2021 (Permalink)

Practice fire safety so you won't incur fire damage.

Preparation is Why SERVPRO is Woodbury's Fire Restoration Leader

Woodbury homeowners enjoy gathering around a cheery bonfire in their backyard. The marketplace continuously develops attractive options that make a fire pit easier to create and maintain for friends and family get-togethers. The chances are good that municipal regulations for recreation fires are not always on a property owner's radar.

What are Woodbury's Recreational Fire Rules?

Safety, protection of the environment, and minimizing nuisance smoke spread are the basic expectations for Woodbury bonfire enthusiasts. No permit is necessary for a recreational fire. Instead, the city lists helpful and commonsense guidelines on its website for community members who want to be cautious and respectful of their neighbors as they relish time around the fire. Ensuring that the warmth of the flames offers comfort, and the glow creates a welcoming ambiance requires:

  • Limits on burning time -- between 8 am and midnight
  • Continual supervision by an adult until extinguished
  • Location only on the owner's property
  • The burning only of properly harvested and dried natural wood
  • No use of liquid accelerants
  • Limited size -- no larger than 3 feet in diameter, with flames 2 feet in height or less
  • Distancing at least 5 feet from property lines and 25 feet from structures or combustible materials
  • A connected hose or another source of water nearby for immediate dousing if needed
  • Portable outdoor fire pits must be placed 15 feet or more away from a structure or combustible materials and used according to the manufacturer's specifications

Are There Conditions that Prohibit Recreational Fires in Woodbury?

Wind speeds of more than 10 miles per hour mean that a recreational fire cannot be lit or maintained. If an otherwise legal fire becomes a nuisance to others, the Woodbury City Code provides extinguishing requirements be applied. Those who consider starting a recreational fire also must educate themselves on any local burning bans. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources issues these prohibitions for general safety. Bans need following, and consequences are possible for a violation.

What Are the Recreational Fire Rules for Multi-Family Housing in Woodbury?

Apartments, townhomes, and condominiums can have additional outdoor burning rules passed by property managers or owners and renters associations. The Woodbury fire guidelines are not made irrelevant by building rules, but the building's requirements can be more restrictive. Residents must attempt to adhere to both sets of rules as much as possible.

Can the SERVPRO Team Restore Outdoor Fire Damage?

If your family bonfire leaps out of control, SERVPRO managers and technicians are ready with innovative techniques to return your backyard living area to "Like it never even happened." The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) training and hand-on experience our crews acquire in responding to interior fire damage translates well to a fire pit damage scenario.
